Coding is no longer just something that web programmers and game programmers do, it is now a skill that is taught at school even to children as young as primary age. Many different technologies that we use now a days rely on programming and it is likely that this will get more and more over the years.
Programming is basically writing instructions in a language that computers understand. Simple task such as telling a character to walk forward in a game is written by code. This code is often made up of commands and symbols. If your child plays Minecraft then this is a great way to teach them about commands and code. There is a game that you can play using the Minecraft characters where you have to drag and drop lines of instructions (which is actually code) into a box to get the character to complete tasks. This allows them to see the link between code and what it can make a character do.
This is a great skill for children to learn and will help them in later life not just if they want to become a programmer but just to understand algorithms and how software works.
